Old Friends

Our Seniors for Seniors adoption program

Glendale Humane Society’s Old Friends adoption program offers a matchmaking service that is both life-saving and life-enhancing!

Qualified seniors 65+ years may adopt one of our designated senior dogs or cats (7+ years of age) at a reduced rate.

Adopters often overlook the wonderful senior animals available in shelters. In many cases, a mature dog or cat is a much better fit for a retiree or senior’s relaxed lifestyle over their younger counterpart. Senior companion animals are typically calm, quiet and well-behaved. They are often housetrained and obedience trained. Less demanding in their needs for exercise and attention, many senior dogs and cats want little more than a soft lap or couch to snuggle on. A senior companion animal can be the ideal match for a senior citizen – they offer unconditional love and go with the flow.

Studies show that companion animals contribute to the well-being and quality of life of senior citizens.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol level
  • Reduced cardiovascular disease
  • Reduced feelings of stress
  • Increased sense of responsibility and alertness
  • Reduced sense of loneliness
  • Improved overall health means fewer doctor appointments
  • Increased incentives for activity and socialization
  • Increased fun!

Senior citizens wishing to participate in this program must meet all requirements of the GHS adoption process, including an approved adoption application, canine parenting class and adoption contract.

Approved adopters will receive a 50% price reduction of the adoption fee; $160.50 for dogs and $65 for cats. The balance of the adoption fee will be drawn from the Old Friends fund.

Make your tax-deductible contribution to the Old Friends fund!

Contributions to the Old Friends fund will be used to benefit any qualified applicant. Donations may be made in any amount, using any of the payment options currently available for other GHS programs.
